NWSL – CHAMPIONSHIP

Today at BBVA Compass Stadium the National Women’s Soccer League Championship will be played, with the Washington Spirits taking on the Western New York Flash.  Houston was preselected as the host for the game in April prior to the regular season.   The Spirit (13-5-3) qualified defeating the Chicago Red Stars and the Western New York Flash (10-6-5) defeated Portland Thorns FC.  Both teams are strong defensively, so it should be a close game today.

In the 9th minute of the game the Washington Spirit scored a goal by #19 Crystal  with assist by #4 Megan Oyster.  The New York Flash came back to also score in the 14th minute by #5 Samantha Mewis with assistance of #9 Lynn Williams.  In the 20th minute of the game the Washington Spirit are playing with nine players, one of their players was injured #3 Caprice Dydasco and taken off the field in a stretcher.  In the 21st minute a substitution was made for the injured player, #22 Alyssa Kleiner entered the game.  The score is tied Spirits 1 and Flash 1 in the first half.

In the second half, Washington Spirit’s #3 Caprice Dydasco returns to the sidelines on crutches.  The second half has really been a defense game,  keeping the game still tied in the 77th minute.   In the 78th minute Washington Spirit made a substitution, entering the game #8 Diana Matheson for #10 Estefania Banini.   In the 83rd minute, New York Flash’s #7 McCall Zerboni was issued a yellow card.  There is going to be four minutes added to the second half, with enough time for one team to possibly score a goal, if no goal there will overtime play.

In the 92nd minute of overtime play, Washington Spirit’s #19 Crystal Dunn scored her second goal of the game to put the Spirit up by a score of 2, and Flash 1.  In the 112th minute of overtime the Spirit made a substitution with #14 Francisca Ordega  coming out and #12 Katie Stengel entering the game.  In the 122nd minute the Flash’s #14 Jessica McDonald was issued a yellow card.  In the 124th minute the Flash scored to tie the game, #9 Lynn Williams with the assistance of #14 Jessica McDonald.  The score is Spirit 2 and Flash 2, now they will go into a penalty shoot out to decide who will be the champions.  The Flash’s goalie #1 Sabrina D’Angelo blocked three points for the Spirits which led them to win the game.

The 2016 NWSL Champions are the Western New York Flash.  The 2016 NWSL MVP is #1 Sabrina D’Angelo.  The attendance for tonight’s game was 8,255.
